Design Challenge 5

The task is to create a 6 minute group video, from appropriated footage and shot footage from each group member. Initially, the group is to shoot individual videos and eventually put them all together into one final group video. The appropriated footage must come from an outside source, so it is heavily suggested to parody a TV show. We have chosen to parody the cooking show "Chopped". Each of our group members (4) will be a contestant, and we will appropriate footage from the show for the judges.

Brainstorming

To begin, we wrote a list of shows and movies we could parody.
1) Love it or List it
2)  Chopped
3) Fear Factor
4) Lord of the Rings
Then, discussing the constraints of the individual to final video with our TA, we chose "Chopped".

Ideation: Flushing out the plan

We want to create a parody version of the show Chopped. Each of us will have four ingredients (i.e. eggs, ramen, a lightbulb and a shoe), and have to create a dish while using all four. Three of us are going to be complete disasters while the fourth (Dylan) will seemingly not care but will pull it together in the last second to win it all. There will be shots of two of us messing up our dishes and doing things completely wrong in the kitchen, one will be cooking outside on a campfire and messing it up in that scene, and the last will be on his phone the whole time until it’s comes to the point where it’s basically impossible to pull anything off but does it anyways. We think putting all these scenes together would be a very funny way of recreating this famous cooking show. It’s a college edition (by usage of ingredients and lack of knowledge) but it can also be seen as everything not to do while cooking, or just cooking fails in general. The appropriation will come in the form of the judging of the dishes, title sequence, and clock timing.

Shot list

The shot list shows exact shots of what we plan on taking and how it will form the final video. We color coded the shots to show who will take which ones.
Black: each of us
Red: appropriated footage
Blue: Megan
Purple: Val
Green: Dylan
Orange: Gavin

Storyboard

The storyboard is a visual representation of the shot list. Matching the numbers will give the descriptions and information on the shot list, but the storyboard gives a picture to the shot list to clarify any confusion.

Individual edit

After shooting the specified shots from the storyboard, I edited together this cut of all of my own pieces of the group video.

Final group edit

After we each created an individual cut, I edited together the individual videos into a cohesive "show".

Conclusion

The most difficult part of this project was editing the final video. Getting each of our individual videos into one, cohesive video was very difficult because of the varied styles, including drastically different audio and lighting. I am proud of how it turned out, and I feel that I could create videos using Premiere Pro on my own in the future.
